Description

Balloon vine, also known as "Mudakathan Keerai" in Tamil and Cardiospermum halicacabum in botanical terms, is a fast-growing medicinal climber widely used in traditional Indian medicine. It is known for its anti-inflammatory properties and is often used in treating joint pain, arthritis, and digestive issues. This hardy plant grows well in most parts of India and is ideal for home gardens.

Sow the seeds directly into well-drained soil with full sunlight or partial shade. Soak the seeds in water for 6 to 8 hours before sowing to improve germination. Sow them about half an inch deep, spacing them 8 to 10 inches apart. Provide support such as a trellis, fence, or balcony grill for the vine to climb.

Germination occurs within 7 to 12 days.

Water the plant regularly but avoid waterlogging. Add compost or organic manure every 15 to 20 days. The plant grows vigorously and produces small white flowers followed by round, green balloon-like pods. Tender leaves can be harvested within 30 to 40 days and used in cooking, especially in dosai batter, soups, or traditional kashayams. The plant continues to yield for several weeks when maintained well.

Balloon vine is suitable for terrace gardens, fences, and balconies. It grows well in pots and open soil across various Indian climates with minimal care.
