Ashwagandha, also known as Indian ginseng or Withania somnifera, is a powerful medicinal herb used in Ayurveda for centuries. It is known for boosting immunity, reducing stress, improving stamina, and supporting overall health. The plant thrives in dry, warm climates and is suitable for cultivation across most regions of India.
Sow the seeds directly in well-drained sandy or loamy soil. Choose a location with full sunlight. Sow the seeds about half an inch deep, spacing them 12 to 15 inches apart. Lightly water after sowing. Germination usually takes 10 to 14 days depending on temperature and moisture levels.
Ashwagandha requires minimal water and grows best in slightly dry conditions. Avoid overwatering. Add organic manure or compost once a month. The plant matures slowly and reaches full root development in 150 to 180 days. Harvest the roots when the lower leaves start yellowing and drying. The roots are then cleaned, dried, and stored for use in powders or decoctions.
Ashwagandha can be grown in garden beds, farm borders, and large grow bags. It is drought-tolerant and highly adaptable to Indian soils, making it ideal for home herbal gardens.
