Red sword beans, also known as Canavalia gladiata, are a traditional climbing legume valued for their long, thick pods and high nutritional content. This variety is rich in protein, iron, and fiber, and is commonly used in traditional South Indian dishes. It grows well in warm and humid climates and is ideal for cultivation across India during monsoon and post-monsoon seasons.
Sow the seeds directly in well-drained, fertile soil with full sunlight. Soak the seeds in water for 8 to 10 hours before sowing to improve germination. Sow the seeds about one inch deep and provide 2 to 3 feet spacing between plants. Use a strong trellis, fencing, or poles to support the vigorous vine growth. Germination takes 6 to 10 days.
Water regularly to maintain soil moisture and apply compost or organic manure every 20 to 25 days. Flowering starts in 45 to 60 days and the long red pods can be harvested from 80 to 100 days after sowing. Harvest when the pods are tender and before the seeds harden for best taste.
Red sword beans are suitable for backyard gardens, terrace farming, and along compound walls. With proper care, the plant yields continuously over a long period and adapts well to different Indian climates.
