Description

Green bitter gourd, also known as karela or pavakkai, is a popular climber vegetable grown widely across India for its nutritional and medicinal benefits. It thrives in warm climates and grows best during summer and monsoon seasons. Select a location with full sunlight and well-drained fertile soil enriched with compost or organic manure.

Sow the seeds directly in the soil or in grow bags. Soak the seeds in water overnight before sowing to speed up germination. Sow the seeds one inch deep with 12 to 15 inches spacing. If growing in rows, maintain 2 to 3 feet between rows. Provide a trellis or vertical support for the plant to climb.

Germination occurs in 7 to 10 days. Water regularly but avoid waterlogging. Apply organic fertilizers every 20 days for better flowering and fruiting. The plant begins to flower in 35 to 45 days and harvesting starts around 55 to 70 days after sowing. Harvest the fruits while they are green and tender for the best taste.

This variety performs well in terrace gardens, balconies with support, and open backyard spaces across all Indian regions with proper care
